The boundary is where most sites are weakest and where most incidents begin. Fences get cut, gates get propped, hedges grow past the camera’s line of sight, and the person responsible for noticing is watching nine other screens. A modern perimeter security system does not solve that by adding hardware to the fence line — it solves it by making the cameras you already own understand the difference between a boundary being crossed and a boundary merely being windy.

The boundary is long and attention is short. A kilometre of fence watched by someone who also answers the phone is not watched. Detection has to be continuous and automatic, or it is decorative.
Legitimate traffic looks identical to illegitimate traffic at a glance. Deliveries, contractors, waste collections and staff arriving early all cross the same lines as everyone else. The system has to separate them by schedule, class and behaviour, not by hoping.
Nuisance alarms destroy discipline. Every site has a story about the system that cried wolf until nobody answered it. The difference between a trusted perimeter and an ignored one is almost always configuration, not technology.
Detection without response is just recording. A clip of someone climbing your fence, reviewed the next morning, has already failed. The value is in the ninety seconds when they are still there.

Perimeter video detection is established practice rather than an experiment: the IEC publishes the video-surveillance system standards most commercial equipment is built to, and the Security Industry Association produces guidance on deploying analytics inside a physical security programme.
That last row is not a nice-to-have. Covering a lens is the standard first move of anyone planning to return, and a boundary camera that has sagged on its bracket does not announce itself — it simply stops detecting, and the rule reports a quiet night.
How the Deployment Fits Together
The architecture is deliberately simple, because complexity is what makes perimeter projects overrun.
Layer one — your existing cameras. Fixed views along the boundary, at gates, and at the approaches to both. Nothing is replaced. In most audits the only genuine gap is a boundary section that was never covered, and one additional camera usually closes it.
Layer two — an on-premise analytics appliance. It ingests the RTSP streams you already have and runs the models locally. Sites that consistently use the light-and-sound tier find that a large share of intruders leave immediately; deterrence, not detention, is the objective.
Layer four — records. Every event is stored with timestamp, zone, direction and clip, so insurance claims, police reports and internal reviews stop depending on somebody remembering to export something.
Configuration: The Difference Between Trusted and Muted
Commission a perimeter properly and it will run for years. Rush it and it will be switched off inside a month. The sequence that works:
- Audit at night, on footage. Walk the boundary on recorded night video, not in daylight. The problems that matter — dark sections, backlighting, overgrown sight lines — only appear at the hours the rule will actually run.
- Arm for people and vehicles only. Class filtering removes animals, birds and blowing debris in one setting.
- Set a minimum dwell of two to three seconds. This removes headlight sweeps, shadows and anything that merely clips a corner.
- Paint ignore zones over the noise. That swaying tree, that reflective panel, that road visible through the fence.
- Schedule honestly. Disarm or soften during shift change, deliveries and grounds maintenance. A rule that fires on approved behaviour teaches staff to ignore all rules.
- Tune in week two, not week twelve. Review the first week’s events with the people who receive them and adjust thresholds once. Then leave it alone.
Which Sites This Suits
Industrial compounds and utilities: fence line, substation boundary, and the unlit approach road. Warehousing and logistics: the yard, the trailer park and the gate, usually layered with construction site safety rules on sites that are still being built out. Business parks and office campuses: the boundary after hours plus the loading area that everyone forgets. Residential estates and gated communities: the perimeter and the entrance, where plate capture and ANPR provide the resident-versus-visitor distinction that makes the difference between useful and annoying.
Sites with a phased build programme get an additional benefit: the zones are geometry. Redrawing a boundary as a compound expands takes seconds, where a physical detection system would need re-cabling.
Building the Business Case
Perimeter projects get approved on three numbers. The first is the response-time improvement: detection at the moment of crossing versus discovery at the morning walk-round. The second is the avoided loss — copper, plant, tools, fuel and stock, plus the downtime that follows. The third, and often the decisive one, is the reduction in guard hours spent on passive monitoring, because the alerts replace the watching rather than adding to it.

Do I need to replace my cameras or add fence sensors? Neither. Zones and lines are drawn on your existing CCTV through an on-premise appliance — no beams, no taut wire, no camera replacement. Sites occasionally add one camera to close a genuinely uncovered section.
Does it work at night and in bad weather? Yes, with adequate lighting on the boundary. Detection quality follows lighting quality closely, so a lighting upgrade is usually the cheapest accuracy improvement available. Rain and wind are handled well once class filtering and a minimum dwell are configured.
Will it keep working if the internet goes down? Yes. All inference runs on-site, so detection, relays, lights and sirens continue; only remote push notifications and off-site dashboards pause.
What does a perimeter deployment cost? Far less than physical detection over the same boundary length, and less than a camera refresh. Cost scales with channel count and the algorithm set, and the normal starting point is a pilot on the two cameras covering your worst fence line.
How is privacy handled? Video never leaves your premises, behavioural rules do not identify anyone, and retention windows, face blurring on exports and role-based access are all configurable.
