How to Set Up Perimeter Security with Virtual Fence
A virtual fence is a detection zone drawn on a camera view. There is no hardware on the boundary — no beam, no cable, no sensor — just a polygon on a live feed, a schedule, and a set of rules about what may enter the polygon and when. Set up well, it is cheaper than physical detection and more informative, because it tells you what crossed, not merely that something did.
Here is the six-step sequence we recommend, in the order that matters.
Step 1 — Choose the Boundary, Not the Camera
Start from the risk, not the equipment. Walk the site and mark the two or three places where an intrusion would actually cost you something: the fence line beside the copper store, the rear gate, the boundary shared with an unlit car park. Most sites need far fewer zones than they assume. Three well-placed zones outperform fifteen speculative ones, because every extra zone adds alerts that someone has to triage.
Step 2 — Check the Framing Before Anything Else
This step is skipped more often than any other and it decides the outcome. For each zone, confirm four things on recorded night footage: the boundary is visible along its whole length, the camera looks along the fence rather than straight down at it, there is enough light (IR or ambient) to resolve a person at the far end, and less than half the frame is sky. If a view fails any of these, move or add a camera — no amount of configuration recovers a badly framed boundary.
Step 3 — Draw the Zones and the Ignore Areas
Draw the detection polygon on the side of the boundary you are protecting, inset a metre or two from the fence itself so that people walking past on the public side cannot trigger it. Then draw the ignore areas: a tree that moves, a reflective panel, a road visible through the boundary. Ten minutes here removes most false alarms you would otherwise chase for a month.
Step 4 — Set the Object Filter and Minimum Dwell
Arm the rule for people and vehicles only. This single setting removes animals, birds, blowing debris and headlight sweeps. Then set a minimum dwell of two to three seconds, which removes anything that merely clips the corner of the zone. Together these two settings are responsible for the difference between a system the site trusts and one that gets muted in week two.
Step 5 — Arm It on a Schedule
Perimeter rules should almost never run twenty-four hours at full sensitivity. Disarm or soften them during shift change, deliveries, grounds maintenance and any predictable window of legitimate traffic. Many sites run three profiles: strict at night, relaxed by day, and a weekend profile for sites that are closed.
Step 6 — Wire the Response
A detection nobody sees is a log entry, not security. Configure the escalation in tiers: a local relay that fires a floodlight and a short siren burst first, a push notification with the snapshot to whoever is on call second, and an escalation to a second recipient if nobody acknowledges within two minutes. Sites that use the light tier find that many intruders leave immediately — the goal is deterrence, not arrest.

Which Rule Goes Where
Two rules cover almost every boundary, and the choice depends on what you want to know. Use perimeter intrusion detection when the question is “is someone inside this area” — a compound, a yard, a fenced enclosure. Use line crossing detection when the question is “did someone come over this line, and from which direction” — a fence line, a threshold, a one-way route. Many sites run intrusion on the interior and line-crossing on the boundary itself.
Two supporting rules belong in the same deployment. Camera tampering detection reports a lens that has been sprayed, covered or disconnected — the standard first move of anyone planning to return. And near entrances, abandoned object detection covers the package left at a gate, which matters more than the person who walked away from it.
