A gate that opens for one car and lets three through is the most common failure in gated community entrance security. The arm lifts, a resident drives in, and an unfamiliar vehicle follows a car-length behind before the barrier drops – a pattern residents call tailgating and logs record as a single authorised entry. The gate worked exactly as designed; the design just never assumed anyone would follow that closely.
Gated community entrance security for an HOA is really three problems sharing one address: vehicles at the gate, people at the pedestrian edge, and the wall between the two. This page covers how each is handled on the cameras most communities already have.
The Three Entrance Problems
Most incident reports at a gated entrance fall into one of three buckets, and they need different rules:
- Vehicle access – who is allowed through, at what hours, and whether the vehicle behind the authorised one was also authorised.
- Pedestrian and side-gate access – people entering on foot, through a pedestrian gate, a gap in planting, or over a wall rather than through the vehicle lane.
- Perimeter breach away from the gate – the boundary itself, where a wall or fence is crossed at a point nobody is watching.
A gate camera pointed at the lane handles the first. It does almost nothing for the other two, which is why entrance security specified as “one camera at the barrier” tends to underperform. Vehicles: Plates, Not Faces
At an entrance, the vehicle is the credential. License plate recognition reads each plate at the barrier and checks it against a list – residents, authorised contractors, a temporary visitor list – and the gate responds accordingly. Two lists do most of the work: an allow list that opens automatically, and a deny list that never does. Where a community has had a specific problem vehicle, plate match against a blacklist raises an alert the moment it reappears, without depending on a guard recognising it.
Tailgating needs a second rule layered on top: count vehicle passages per gate opening and flag any opening that admits more vehicles than it authorised. One authorised entry followed by an unauthorised one is exactly the event the entrance log will never show on its own.
Deliveries are worth planning for separately. A community that receives fifty parcels a day has a steady stream of unfamiliar vehicles that are entirely legitimate, and a rule set that treats every unknown plate as an incident will be ignored within a week. Time-of-day windows and a visitor list are usually enough.
People: The Pedestrian Edge
Pedestrian gates, side accesses and the strip of planting next to the barrier are where tailgating happens on foot. The relevant rules are the ones that notice presence and dwell rather than speed: loitering detection around a keypad or side gate, and intrusion detection for defined after-hours zones. Both run on the cameras already covering the entrance; neither needs a new mounting point.
Walls: The Boundary Between Gates
The third problem is the fence line itself. A wall is only as good as the attention paid to it, and communities are frequently breached at the least visible point rather than at the entrance. Privacy: What an HOA Board Will Ask
Any board approving entrance analytics will ask two questions, and they deserve straight answers before installation rather than after a complaint.
Where the video goes. With on-premise processing it stays on site. An edge appliance in the community’s own cabinet analyses the streams locally, so resident footage is not being uploaded to a vendor’s cloud to be analysed there.
Retention and access. Retention is a policy decision the board owns, not a default the vendor sets. Plate data in particular is personal information, and a written retention window plus a named list of who can search it should be agreed before go-live.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we keep our existing gate cameras? Usually yes. If they produce a standards-based ONVIF or RTSP stream and have a usable view of the plate area, they can be analysed as they are. Angle and lighting matter more than camera age.
Does it replace the gate operator or access control system? No. Analytics sit alongside them and make them smarter – the barrier still does the physical work. Plate rules decide whether it should open.
