What Is an Edge AI Box? How It Turns Cameras Smart
Most security cameras are eyes without a brain. They record everything and notice nothing, which is why a break-in gets discovered the next morning instead of interrupted at 2 a.m. An edge AI box fixes this without replacing a single camera: it is a small computing appliance that connects to the cameras already on your walls, watches their feeds in real time, and raises an alert the moment something specific happens.
The “edge” part means the thinking happens on-site, inside the box, not in a distant data center. Video never has to leave your building to become useful.
Why Not Just Send Everything to the Cloud?
Cloud video analytics exists, and for some sites it works. But streaming every camera to a cloud provider costs bandwidth money every month, adds seconds of delay, and leaves your footage – lobbies, locker rooms, loading docks – sitting on someone else’s servers. How It Works, in Three Steps
First, the box pulls live streams from your existing cameras over ONVIF and RTSP, decoding H.264 or H.265 video from nearly every brand in service.
Second, it runs detection models directly on that video inside the box – the approach known as edge computing. No frames are uploaded for analysis; the judgment happens where the video lands.
Third, when a rule fires, the box acts: a pop-up on the guard’s monitor with the clip attached, a siren or strobe at the location, a message to a duty phone, or a webhook into your existing system. This is the basic loop of modern video analytics, moved from the cloud to your equipment room.
What It Can Detect
An edge box runs a library of detection algorithms enabled per camera and per schedule. Sizing a Box for Your Site
Three numbers decide the size: how many cameras feed it (our systems scale from 2–128 channels), how many algorithms run at once, and at what resolution. Compute is quoted in TOPS, from 1 to 256 across the range, and the honest answer to “which tier” is: count your cameras, list the detections that must run simultaneously, and match the tier – with headroom for the next algorithm you will inevitably add. Frequently Asked Questions
Does it need the internet to work?
No. Detection runs entirely on-site. The internet is only used to deliver alerts to your phone or dashboard when you are away, and the system keeps detecting even if the line goes down.
Do we have to replace our existing cameras?
No, and this is the main reason sites choose a box. Any camera that outputs an ONVIF or RTSP stream works, including most IP hybrids already in service. Only cameras that cannot see the scene you need covered need replacing.
How is it different from an NVR?
An NVR records; an edge AI box understands. Many sites keep their NVR for storage and add the box for detection, since the two connect over the same network. Some newer NVRs include basic motion AI, but a dedicated box runs far more algorithms at once across more camera brands.
How do I choose a compute tier?
